SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES IN TAHITI

Snorkeling, diving, tennis, sailing, water skiing, windsurfing, outrigger canoeing, horseback ridding, biking, hiking, and climbing are activities available on most islands in French Polynesia. Game fishing is also widely available, though true aficionados recommend December through July as the best months for this sport. Golfers will find a spectacular course on the island of Tahiti

DIVING IN TAHITI

You can dive in French Polynesia all year around. However, you’ll have the best diving conditions between the month of April and November. Local visibility often reaches 130 feet. Diving centers follow strict safety regulations, but since most of the diving in French Polynesia is rather easy in favorable conditions, even newly certified divers will have no trouble finding good diving spots. For divers who want additional training, most centers offer continuing diver education and deliver full certifications C.M.A.S, KF.E.S.S.M., P.A.D.I and BSAC certification. Most of the diving takes place between 60 feet (18 m) and 80 feet (24 m). For very experienced divers, Tahiti and her islands offer deeper dives as well, between 100 and 140 feet (30 to 42 m) on ledges and on wall dives that drop off to infinity.

Most of the diving centers rent all necessary equipment or include it in their rates. Scuba tanks are furnished with BC vests, and regulators usually have a tank pressure gauge. Rental equipment is subject to periodic check-ups and is thus very reliable.

SHOPPING IN TAHITI

Hand-blocked pareos (the traditional wraparound garment of Tahiti), original gold jewelry, local shell craft, baskets, wood carvings and vanilla beans can all be purchased in the markets and shops of Tahiti. French imports, such as perfumes, are available in duty free shops, while specialty shops within Papeete offer French fashions. Stores are normally closed daily for a long lunch, on Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday.

SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS OF TAHITI

The islands of French Polynesia offer some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.  The Society Islands possess incredible mountains, waterfalls, and tropical vegetation.  The Atolls offer some of the clearest water lagoons and beautiful beaches in the world.  In addition, the islands are filled with history and culture.
