Huahine is a spectacular island. The people are friendly, the
forests are lush, and the mountains are beautiful. Its as beautiful as Bora Bora or
Moorea but far less crowded. Visitors have just recently discovered this quaint island,
where you can experience a more traditional Polynesian way of life. The beaches are
unmatched in beauty and the anchorages welcome you with charm and enchantment. Huahine is
the South Seas of story books and dreams- a place where you can leave the modern world
behind and give yourself over to the joy of living. Huahine lies 110 miles northwest of
Tahiti in the Leeward Society Islands, and is visible from Raiatea, Tahaa and Bora Bora.
Comprised of Huahine Nui (big
Huahine) and Huahine-Iti (little Huahine), the two islands are joined by a small bridge
and are enclosed within a protective necklace of coral. Off-shore motu islets lie inside
the barrier reef, providing efficient gardens for Huahines watermelon and cantaloupe
industry. A road, mostly non-paved, winds 32 km. (20 miles) around the two islands,
passing through small villages where the 5,411 inhabitants live in colorful, modest homes.
Huahine has several accommodation choices ranging from the
more upscale Te Tiare Resort to the small family owned and operated Relais Mahana.
For detailed information regarding the hotels in Huahine we invite you to visit the

With its deep water bays and lagoons bordered by motus, mountainous
Huahine is ripe for your exploration. The lagoon, bordered by white sand beaches, is rich
with sea life, and Maeva Village is a wealth of archeological sites. The principal village
of Fare slumbers under the shade of almond and acacia trees. You can go horseback riding
to the beaches or into the mountains along established trails. There are also 4x4s, cars,
bicycles and scooters to rent to venture around the island. Lagoon excursions, motor boat
sailing, scuba diving, and deep-sea fishing are also enjoyed here. If surfings your
thing, dont miss the renowned waves of Avamoa Pass. Scenic views abound whether one
wades along the coast or climbs in the mountains. With more than thirty miles of roads to
explore, Huahine, unlike other islands, can take several days to discover. Make it
an alternative or a perfect complement to legendary Bora Bora or lush, tropical Moorea.
Visit the tiny, picturesque port of Fare when it really comes to
life on shipping day, and visit the sleepy village of Parea, where Polynesians live a
happy, peaceful life, little changed over the generations. The historic, former royal
village of Maeva is like an open-air museum, where restored sacrificial temples (marae)
and other ancient sites tell of a civilization the existed over 1,000 years
ago.

The word "Huahine"
means pregnant woman in Tahitian. The island gets its name from the shape of the
island. When viewed from a distance, it truly does look like a pregnant woman lying
on her back.

Huahine is actually two islands, when viewed from
the air. An arch bridge
connect the two. It is believed that, at one time, Huahine was one island. Since all of
these volcanic islands are sinking, ever so slowly, the two highest portions of the
original island are what show above the surface of the ocean today.
Huahine is a tropical garden with gentle rolling hills and lush
foliage, and at the same time, it is a garden rich in agriculture. The soil is excellent
and everywhere you look there are plantations of taro, coffee, vanilla or melons.
Off-shore "motu" islets lie inside the barrier reef, providing luscious gardens
for Huahines watermelon and cantaloupe industry.
