Approximately 350 miles southwest of Tahiti you will find the Austral Islands including Rurutu and 5 smaller islands which are Iles Maria, Rimatara, Tubuai, Raivavae and Rapa. These islands are primarily, wild and full of caves. People here master all of the traditional crafts but they are known for their pandanus fiber weaving skills. From July to October, humpback whales come to breed here and provide an unforgettable show. Only Rurutu, Tubuai and Raivavae can be reached by plane, and only Rurutu has smaller hotels on the island.
